In April 2026, another noteworthy museum opened in Riyadh—the Black Gold (Oil) Museum.
The concept is quite interesting—a narrative of the history of the oil industry, including that of the Kingdom, is accompanied by contemporary art pieces.
The museum features works by over 170 artists from around the world.
There are plenty of interactive elements.
Just take the installation showing oil spewing randomly to the surface!
Or the fashion show, where mannequins display actual clothing (including designer brands) made from petroleum byproducts (nylon, etc.).
Personally, I was impressed by the collection of postcards depicting oil industry sites from around the world. These are real postcards that actual people sent to one another. There are even letters from them…
Another unusual feature is an interactive vending machine showing how oil is involved in the production of coffee and bottled water (from manufacturing to sale).
Not to mention the historical video recordings, interviews, photographs, and reference materials, which are also abundant…
I was also surprised to find an entire gallery dedicated to environmental issues caused by the oil industry (oil spills, plastic waste).
All in all, I highly recommend it!
Tickets are free, but you need to book them in advance here.
